The Toyota 1NZ-FE is the legendary 1.5-liter inline-four engine found in the Toyota Prius (Gen 1 & 2), Yaris (Vitz), Echo, Scion xA, xB, and the Japanese-market Toyota bB. While reliable, electrical gremlins or swap projects often require a technician to interface directly with the Engine Control Unit (ECU) .
The 1NZ-FE uses a simple ON/OFF VVT-i. The ECU pin E5-12 (VVT Solenoid) sends a ground signal to advance cam timing. At idle, duty cycle is 0%; under load, it pulses. Actuator Outputs (Making the Engine Run) These pins are where the ECU controls the mechanical parts. Do not use a standard test light on these; use a Logic Probe or LED test light (low current). 1nz ecu pinout
