Lena pulled over and got out, her heels sinking into the mud. She walked toward a gap in the shed’s corrugated wall. What she saw through that crack would unmake her.
“That’s what we tell ourselves,” she said. “That there’s a wall. On one side, dogs and cats—they feel pain. On the other side, pigs and cows—they feel… what? Nothing? Just dinner?” Lena pulled over and got out, her heels sinking into the mud
