The hum became a scream. The coral-thing lunged, but its hand passed through her arm like smoke—the scrambler was already singing, a frequency that unraveled the machines’ cohesion. The gel turned to water. The spires cracked, wept salt, and collapsed. The faces on the coral blinked once, twice—and for a single, glorious second, Makai’s eyes were his own again. “Atoll 3.5,” she murmured, reading the spray-painted letters on a half-buried concrete slab. The name was a lie. This wasn’t an atoll, not anymore. It was a scar. The coral-thing lunged, but its hand passed through

She stood and walked toward the lagoon. The water wasn’t water anymore. It was a crystalline gel, thick and shimmering, and beneath its surface the coral had grown into impossible spires—M.C. Escher staircases of calcite, spiraling into darkness. Lights pulsed within them like synapses.

Then a shape rose from the gel. It was roughly human, but only roughly. Its skin was coral, porous and pink. Its eyes were polished black pearls. It walked on fused toes that left no footprints.
