Instead, the text as known today is a medieval compilation (circa 4th–10th century CE) of maxims drawn from multiple sources. This paper clarifies the historical provenance, reviews authentic Sanskrit editions available in PDF format via academic and public domain channels, and advises on how to distinguish reliable versions from commercial or corrupted reprints. 1. Introduction Countless online searches for “Chanakya Niti original book PDF” reflect a genuine desire to access ancient Indian wisdom. However, the term original is problematic. The earliest extant manuscripts of maxims attributed to Chanakya date from the late 1st millennium CE—over a thousand years after Chanakya’s lifetime (c. 375–283 BCE). This paper provides a roadmap for scholars and lay readers to obtain faithful Sanskrit-to-English or Sanskrit-only PDFs, with critical commentary on textual authenticity. 2. Historical Background: Chanakya the Author vs. The Niti Tradition Chanakya (also known as Vishnugupta or Kautilya) was the chief advisor to Emperor Chandragupta Maurya. His seminal work, the Arthashastra , is a treatise on economics and political strategy.
