And after ten episodes, one thing is clear: It is the most ambitious, frustrating, and visually stunning piece of animation the franchise has ever produced. Adult Swim was surprisingly honest when they called this an "anime." Unlike the main show’s manic ADHD pacing, Season 1 operates on dream logic. The plot, as much as it exists, follows a "Space Shogun" version of Rick who is locked in a temporal war with the Galactic Federation. But that’s just the A-plot.

However, if you are a fan of Serial Experiments Lain , Neon Genesis Evangelion , or the darker Rick and Morty comics, this is a masterpiece. Episode 7, "The Memory Shogun’s Lament," is arguably the best piece of character study Rick has ever received, exploring why he actually drinks—not for fun, but to silence the versions of himself that succeeded.
