His father had known. He had scanned his own family. Seen the End of Support Life dates. And he never used the Reconcile switch. Not once. He just taped the remote to the bottom of a board and waited.

The worst was the photograph. A faded Polaroid of his father, age twenty-five, standing in front of the same house. Leo pointed the remote at his father’s face. Serial Number Checker Switch

Leo spent the next hour scanning everything. The toaster. SN: 06-14-2019-TOAST-04. STATUS: DEPRECATED. The oak tree in the backyard. SN: 04-01-1972-OAK-09. STATUS: GROWING. END OF LIFE: 2031. The mailbox. The car. The neighbor’s kid’s bicycle. Everything had a serial number. Everything had a status. Active. Deprecated. Paused. Pending recall. His father had known

He lowered the remote. “It’s… it’s nothing.” He pointed it at the dog, sleeping on the rug. And he never used the Reconcile switch

The device looked like a garage door remote from the 1990s: gray plastic, a single rubber button, and a tiny LCD screen that glowed an unsettling shade of green. It had no brand name, only a faded sticker on the back that read: .

“Everything okay?” she whispered.
