Sperm receptacles are specialized organs for storing viable sperm following mating. In this sixth installment of the series, we examine ultrastructural variations across 14 invertebrate species. Scanning electron microscopy revealed cuticular folds, glandular epithelium, and lumenal pH gradients critical for long-term sperm viability. Experimental removal of receptacles in Drosophila melanogaster reduced female fertility by 87%.
