The movie begins with Carmen (Daryl Sabara) and Juni (Alex A. Roberts) Suarez, who are now teenagers, living with their parents, Greg (Antonio Banderas) and Machete (Danny Trejo), who are retired spies. However, their peaceful life is disrupted when their grandmother, Grandmama (Hollander-Tan) is kidnapped by the Timekeeper (J.K. Simmons), a former spy turned time-traveler.
